Perhaps a slightly more difficult decision to make is if the car you have seen online is the right car for you? A quick inspection and drive around the block will suffice for most car buyers, but if you want to be extra sure that your next car is absolutely right for you, then follow these next few steps and rest assured that you have done all you can to make sure that there are no problems with it:
Quick Inspection
-
Check that the doors are all the same colour. Off colour panels means something’s been replaced - perhaps an accident?
-
Check that all doors are aligned correctly when you look down the length of the car.
-
Make sure there is no surface rust, around windows seals front and back.
-
Check the seats and dash for obvious signs of wear and cracking.
Mechanical Inspection
-
Suspension – push the car a few times from side to side, if it rocks – the shocks are worn. It should rock and come back only once.
-
Brakes – squeaky brakes are not a sign of worn brakes, you need to check the disc and see if it has ridges on it. Same with the pads, they should not have less than 5mm left on them.
-
Oil – a smoking car is not a good sign. Check for oil underneath the car and pop the hood to check if there is any obvious oil weeping from the head or sump. A car that uses oil is a problem.
-
Electrical things - Make sure all the gadgets inside the car work – cigarette lighter, radio, cd shuttle and cabin lights coming on when you open the doors.
-
Electric mirrors and windows go up (and down!)
-
Air-conditioning – does it turn and get cool. And can you turn it off again?
-
Drive train – stick y gears are an expensive problem, and a hard clutch means that it’s on it’s way out.
-
Make sure all glass is free from cracks and scratches as these can hamper your vision when the sun is low.
And then lastly, check that you have a spare wheel, wheel spanner and jack –
don’t forget the set of spare keys! Now go and
